My First Magical Candle
It seems like yesterday I was blowing out my candles on my 16th birthday. Flash forward and I am looking at two glittery candles that were shaped like a 5 and a 0! Wow, what the heck happened? I reflected carefully before placing my intentions on the special candles and then blew them out. My first spell cast as a 50 year old!
Candles Are Ancient
People have been making candles for over 5000 years. The ancient Egyptians used beeswax to make torches and later wick candles. Today I made candles for the first time. My wax of choice was soy. My objective was to make a slow burning candle so I could add essential oils to it.
Melt the Wax
I started with a metal coffee pot that I placed over a small pot of boiling water to melt 8 ounces of soy wax flakes. When the wax was melted and reached 185 F, I added in 30 drops of peppermint extract and stirred to combine. (Be very careful with the wax to essential oil ratio. If you use too much, you can be making a wax fireball so do weigh your wax and measure your oil carefully)
Pour Your Candles
I pour the melted wax and essential oil into candle holders I prepared in advance. The preparation entailed using a hot glue gun to fix a pre-waxed wick to the bottom of the holder. I used a clothespin to hold the wick upright until the wax set.
End Results
I have learned so much since I first made these candles. I had no idea at the time that you must allow your candles to cure. To get the best scent and to really know how they will burn, wait 14 days for soy wax to cure before burning them. Also, if you experience some cracks on the top, use a heat gun to slightly melt the wax to smooth it back out. I did have this experience too.
My Intentions
The past year has been a tough one with inflation. My intentions behind the candles were to cast a prosperity spell but that is a topic for another post. Did you make your own soy candles? Let me know how yours turned out.
